Fall in love with the new hair metal holiday ballad
When San Francisco rock band Love Jerks started writing songs and a script for their upcoming feature film, they knew they needed to include a holiday ballad. The film, Tiger Tears is a love letter to hair metal with a heartfelt dose of good laughs and a literal birth*. The band is fronted by a real–life couple of lead singers, Rebecca Garza-Bortman & Bryan Garza. The duo wanted to capture both the struggle and magic that so many of us feel in December. So with seasonality and spices in mind, they wrote: “I Could Leave…On Christmas Eve,” the first single off the upcoming Tiger Tears soundtrack.
The music video opens during a tense moment in the film. As singer-guitarist, Bryan Garza explains: “When you’re struggling to connect your art to a new audience, you can find yourself questioning how much to chase your dream, at the expense of souring your most treasured relationship. My character, Floyd, is trying to stay positive for his partner, Rosie, but deep in his heart he knows they are both on a losing streak.”
When asked what intrigued her about writing music of the hair metal persuasion, singer Rebecca Garza-Bortman explained “So much of modern music bores me, but, I’ve always loved hair metal ballads. I don’t feel like that music should stay stuck in the 1980s. Go into any karaoke bar and you’ll see I’m not alone. Any song can be a vehicle for emotion, but a hair metal ballad is like pulling up in an oil tanker. Did I mention that we filmed this video with a newborn at home? So the emotions flowed pretty freely for me.”
The video itself is a rich spectacle of sequined spandex, set against miles of holiday lights. According to the video’s director, Unni Rav: “Expect even more passion and hairspray from us in the new year. It’s going to be mind-blasting!”
* Yes, literally, this film includes an actual birth by the two lead characters.
